Prophecy is not a state of the nation address by God, and therefore needs to be responded to in a proper way. Through prophecy, God lets us in on what He is up to at that point in time. He lets us know His heartbeat and desires. He lets us know a bit of what is in His mind. What a privilege! 
Here’s a few tips on how you should respond to prophecy when you hear it, whether it is directed to you as an individual or at a congregation or community to which you belong:

• Take it seriously – do not despise it, it’s your Heavenly Father talking to you (Hebrews 3:12-19).
• As much as possible, write it down for future reference (Jeremiah 36:1-3; Habakkuk 2: 2-3).
• Count yourself in it – God is talking to you to be a part of its fulfillment (Matthew 3:15; 5:17).
• Until it is fulfilled, develop the habit of studying it regularly (Proverbs 4:20-21).
• Pray seriously about it in faith for God to give you wisdom to respond to it (Daniel 9: 1-3; James 1:5-7).
• As far as possible, arrange sessions of intense prayer and fasting over it to develop sensitivity to the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14; Ezra 5:1-2).
• Respond by taking action towards its fulfillment as the Holy Spirit leads you (Romans 8:14; Ezra 5:1-2).
